The grain chain

This topic helps children learn more about the main parts of the wheat grain and the process it takes to be milled into different flours, used by bakers to produce a variety of everyday foods from bread and pastry to cakes and biscuits.
 

Objectives for this lesson

* To consolidate understanding of the 'grain chain', and introduce what happens after farming and harvest
* To understand the milling process and how wheat is made into flour
* To know key words associated with the milling process and to have a basic understanding of what they mean
* To know the difference between wholemeal, brown and white flour
* To know and name a range of foodstuffs which are made from flour.
