Growing our food

This topic is great opportunity for children to experience the role of a farmer, by growing their own wheat plants and understanding the impact of the different seasons.
 

Objectives for this lesson

* To understand what is needed to enable seeds to grow into grain which can be harvested
* To become aware that grain produces flour which can be made into food we eat
* To become aware that weather and the seasons affect the cycle of growth
* To recognise the differences between the seasons and be able to name them
* To measure seed growth
* To observe, analyse and record what has happened to seeds
* To communicate with others about the activity.

Lessons

Duration

Two complete lessons, the first of about an hour and the second of about 45 minutes. You will also need to allow 10 minutes each day for three alternate days for the pupils to record through drawing, writing (or both) what is happening to their seeds.
