Growing our food

This topic looks at how wheat is grown in the UK through the year and the different factors, such as weather, and the decisions made by the farmer can have an impact on the success of the harvested crop.
 

Objectives for this lesson

* To consolidate understanding of the growth cycle/the growing year
* To know key words related to the growing year
* To know the key things wheat needs to enable it to grow well
* To know that wheat is the main cereal crop in the UK
* To plan, carry out and evaluate a 'growth' test including the use of fair testing
* To be able to read and draw conclusions about the growing year from a chart showing temperature, rainfall and sunshine
* To have an awareness of which areas of the UK produce the largest crops of wheat and to understand why.

These objectives relate to the whole 7–11 age range. The information and activities develop in complexity as the topic progresses.
