What you do

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7. Place the greaseproof paper onto a baking tray.
  2. Sieve together the flour and pinch of salt into a mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in the yeast and sugar.
  4. Add the warm water, and mix into a dough.
  5. Knead the dough for 5 minutes.
  6. Divide the dough into 4 and shape into rolls.
  7. Place the 4 rolls onto the baking tray.

  9. Brush the tops of the bread rolls with milk or beaten egg.
  10. Then sprinkle on sesame seeds, poppy seeds, grated cheese or diced onion to decorate the rolls.
  11. Bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes until golden brown.

Something else to try

Flavoured rolls

Why not try adding 25g apple, grated cheese, dried fruit or chopped onion to the flour mixture (step 2).

Cottage loaves

Try making 'cottage loaves' like the ones in the video. When you have divided the dough into 4 rolls, divide each one again so you have a smaller piece and a larger piece of dough. Make each piece into a round ball and put the small one on top of the larger one (like making a snowman). Push a clean finger into the top of the smaller piece of dough.
