The Grain Chain
14 to 16 year olds

Introduction

This section of the website is introduced by an interactive white board (IWB) activity which conveys the concepts of the 'grain chain', and the processes by which a seed of wheat is 'transformed' into a huge range of food products, especially bread. It is important that students have an understanding of the grain chain in order to make the most of the rest of the information provided.

There are also four case studies. Each explores a particular aspect/s of the grain chain in depth, and corresponds to a particular broad subject area:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • ICT/computing
  • Geography/Environment

On this website, the following abbreviations are used:

IWB = interactive whiteboard activity

IP = information page (page on the website, which can be printed off)

AS = activity sheet (PDF on website, which can be downloaded and/or printed off)

There is a considerable amount of information covered in the case studies. It is not possible on this website to provide lesson plans targeted at specific age and/or ability groups. The teacher’s notes therefore provide general lesson plans for the case studies, which can be adapted and differentiated in order to fit into a school’s own curriculum. The case studies could be delivered as discrete lessons, or as a package studied by groups within a class with the results of the research being presented to the whole group in a plenary session.

Please be aware that general curriculum links only are given at the start of each topic. Relevance to your teaching will depend on exactly which syllabus and options your students are studying. You may also wish to make links to:

  • ICT/computing
  • Enterprise learning
  • Work-related learning/Learning for life and work
  • Citizenship
  • Business studies/management
  • Health-related studies
  • Literacy and numeracy.

Note for teachers: IPs and ASs are standard for the whole age range and so will need to be differentiated according to the needs of your students. You may choose to shorten information, adapt language or break content down into smaller modules.
