The Grain Chain

Introduction

There are six main topics in this section, plus two interactive games and a quiz. They build on the work covered in the 5–7 year-olds’ area of the website (where food comes from and the 'grain chain') as well as looking at energy, food groups, healthy diet and festivals of food celebrated around the world.

The topic objectives and curriculum links outlined are those that relate directly to the content of this science/geography/environmental studies/health-based topic. PSHE/PSD/PSE, mathematics and English links which directly relate to the topic have also been added but there will be other more general learning objectives and curriculum links that you may wish to include.

On this website, the following abbreviations are used:

IWB = interactive whiteboard activity

IP = information page (page on the website, which can be printed off)

AS = activity sheet (PDF on website, which can be downloaded and/or printed off)

There is a considerable amount of information covered in the topics for this age group and individual schools may wish to separate out different parts of each topic to build into their own curriculum planning to suit different levels of age and ability. It is not possible on this website to provide lesson plans targeted at specific age and/or ability groups. The teacher’s notes therefore cover the topics broken down into sections, which can be adapted and differentiated in order to fit into a school’s own curriculum.

General lesson plans are provided for the different topics, and teachers may then adapt these lesson plans to meet their own needs. Also, several of the lessons could be shortened, with part of the content being used as homework. Activities suitable for homework are identified, but these activities could also be used in the classroom. It is down to the needs of individual schools as to how topic content is finally broken down.

Note for teachers: IPs and ASs are standard for the whole age range and so will need to be differentiated according to the needs of your pupils. You may choose to shorten information, adapt language or break content down into smaller modules. Other suggestions are provided within the lesson plans.
