The Grain Chain website includes a number of topic areas where you may wish
to carry out food preparation or cooking activities with your pupils/students.
Even if your school does not have facilities for making hot food, offering
some simple cooking sessions is an excellent way of introducing young people to
healthy food and a nutrition-focused lifestyle. It’s also enormous fun!
The recipes are found in the Recipes section of the website, and each one is
graded according to skill level, preparation time and whether
there is a supporting video showing how the recipe can be made.
Full instructions, together with a list ingredients and equipment required, are
given for each recipe. Where there is a video available, you may wish to watch
this with your pupils/students before you begin the food preparation activity.
Health and safety
It is vital that you fully risk assess your cookery session well in advance.
You will need somewhere for children to wash and dry their hands hygienically,
and work in clean conditions. If your school has a dedicated class kitchen
area/food technology area, you should already have Health & Safety rules in
place.
Several of the recipes we have given do not require heating and are simple
enough to encourage children to go home and repeat the recipe with family and
friends. If so, please do remind them to wash their hands frequently.
Before pupils/students begin any food preparation or cooking
activity, they should be aware of the key hygiene and safety points. These are
given in IP
'Before you start: food and safety'
You also need to be absolutely sure (depending on the recipe) that
no-one in your class has a nut or gluten allergy, e.g. by writing a letter to
parents to ensure that everyone may take part.
