
Approximately 1 hour. However, this lesson can be shortened so that the main activity is set as homework. The shortened lesson would take the time to watch the videos plus approximately 5 minutes to outline the homework task.
Watch the video materials allowing time for the pupils to make relevant comments if possible.
Outline task to pupils and distribute AS 'Design a better breakfast' (plus IP 'Eating for health' and IP 'It's on the label' for reference). Allow pupils to work together to support each other.
Ask pupils to offer ideas on how they planned their breakfasts. Use this discussion time to consolidate and recap learning of what constitutes a healthy and balanced meal.

Pupils could be asked to plan a full day's menu which is balanced and healthy and present data (in the form of a Venn diagram or similar) to support choices.
Teachers must be aware of health, safety and hygiene issues when food is being prepared. Refer to Running a cooking session: guidance for teachers before you start.
Cultural differences regarding food must also be taken into account.
