What you need
Ingredients
- 200g plain flour
- 5g/5ml spoon sugar
- 5g/5ml spoon of fast action dried yeast
- pinch of salt
- 50–75ml warm water
- milk or beaten egg to glaze
- To decorate (optional):
- poppy seeds
- sesame seeds
- grated cheese
- dried onion

What you do
- Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7. Place the greaseproof paper
onto a baking tray.
- Sieve together the flour and pinch of salt into a mixing bowl.
- Stir in the yeast and sugar.
- Add the warm water, and mix into a dough.
- Knead the dough for 5 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 4 and shape into rolls.
- Place the 4 rolls onto the baking tray.
- Cover the dough and leave in a warm place for 30 minutes to allow it
to rest and double in size.
- Brush the tops of the bread rolls with milk or beaten egg.
- Then sprinkle on sesame seeds, poppy seeds, grated cheese or diced
onion to decorate the rolls.
- Bake in the oven for 10–15 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove the rolls from the oven and allow to cool.
Something else to try
Flavoured rolls
Why not try adding 25g apple, grated cheese, dried fruit or chopped onion to
the flour mixture (step 2).
Cottage loaves
Try making 'cottage loaves' like the ones in the video. When you have divided
the dough into 4 rolls, divide each one again so you have a smaller piece and a
larger piece of dough. Make each piece into a round ball and put the small one
on top of the larger one (like making a snowman). Push a clean finger into the
top of the smaller piece of dough.
