The Grain Chain
Where does our bread come from

FROM WHEAT SEED TO TABLE

Farmers plant seeds which grow into wheat. The grains from the wheat plants are used to make flour. Flour can be used to make lots of different foods, like the bread or breakfast cereal you have at breakfast, and biscuits and cakes.

A field the size of a football pitch would grow enough wheat to make over 11,000 loaves of bread!

Follow the steps in the grain chain to see how the farmer's wheat seed is transformed into the toast on your table.

The farmer ploughs (digs up) the field so it is ready for the seeds

The seeds grow into plants. They need rain and sunshine to make them grow.

Grain from the harvested plants is taken to a mill and made into flour

Bread is taken to the shops

The farmer uses a machine to plant the seeds in small holes in the soil

When the plants are big enough, the farmer harvests them

A baker uses the flour to make bread

Shoppers buy the bread – it makes great toast or sandwiches!
